Choosing a carpet for your interior

Whether it's summer, winter, spring or autumn: a carpet should be an essential part of your interior. Not only does it keep your feet nice and warm in cold outside temperatures, it also provides an extra layer of insulation and it instantly creates a portion of cosiness. Moreover, a carpet also succeeds in creating a strong whole from large spaces. Below you will find a number of useful tips that will help you choose the ideal carpet: from formats and styling to colours.

When choosing a carpet, the possibilities seem endless. There are numerous prints with a beautiful appearance, hand-woven copies with rich colors, rugs with a unique texture for a mature look, but also timeless vintage copies and carpets made from sustainable materials. If you want to choose the right piece for your interior, you have to take a few golden rules into account.

The function of the carpet

First things first : it remains important to determine exactly why you want a carpet. Preventing cold feet, demarcating a playground for the children, providing more cushioning and insulation, creating cosiness and cosiness,... all these reasons require a specific rug and push your choices for print, design and format in a certain direction. After all, a carpet in the children's playroom needs a completely different function and look & feel than a luxurious one statement piece in your living room.

Dimensions and size

Determining the right size for a carpet often turns out to be a tough one. In the store you see everything without the context of your own home and it is difficult to estimate whether a carpet fits in the space you have in mind. To determine the dimensions, it is best to look at the room setup. Get out some old newspapers and lay them in the floor in the size of how you would like your carpet. For example, if your coffee table is in front of your sofa, you can place the carpet under the coffee table and let it continue under the seat to create a more beautiful, coherent whole and to give the room more depth. Do you put a carpet under the dining room table? Then count on a buffer of at least 60 cm along the table so that everyone can easily move their chair.

Circle, rectangle or square?

The shape of the carpet is largely determined by the space it will be placed in and the shape of the furniture that surrounds it. A rectangular rug is just about the most popular option and strongly emphasizes the rectangular shape of a room. With a round carpet you break the lines and provide more playfulness and contrast in the same room. A square rug looks best in a room that is not square or rectangular. Combine it with other carpets that you drape casually over it for an even more interesting whole. With a long runner you make sure that people feel welcome in your home.

High versus low pile carpet

When choosing the type of carpet, the battle often breaks out between high-pile carpet on the one hand and low-pile carpet on the other. A high-pile carpet has a more casual composition that makes it more eye-catching, more luxurious and creates more warmth and cosiness. Ideal for the living room or bedroom. A short-pile carpet, on the other hand, is much easier to maintain and tighter, making it ideal for the dining room.

Durable materials

When purchasing a rug, always choose the most sustainable materials such as bamboo, hair, wool, cotton and bamboo. They often provide a luxurious and characterful touch to your interior. Durable materials differ greatly in terms of maintenance. For example, you have to clean a cotton carpet regularly, while wool is just dirt-repellent. A room where you will have a lot of gradient on your carpet is best decorated with a more synthetic carpet made of polyester. This type of rug does not discolour quickly and is very easy to clean. Ideal for the playroom or kitchen.

The color of your carpet

The icing on the cake is of course choosing a carpet that perfectly matches the look & feel of your interior in terms of color. If you buy a sustainable piece, chances are that you invest in a timeless item in a rather neutral color. Even with a more subdued and sleek, sober interior style, it is better to opt for more neutral tones and plain carpets. Planning to place your carpet close to a busy wallpaper or near a wall or piece of furniture with a strong color? Then neutral is again the way to go .

But of course you can also really make a statement with a rug. Choose a colorful eye-catcher or a rug with a unique graphic print to make your interior look more eclectic or opt for a lived-in item with a vintage pattern that draws attention more subtly.
